A few weeks ago I attended the King and Queen of the Sea 2012 event, an annual fashion show/pageant held in the Portuguese community in order to raise funds for the Portuguese Welfare.
A friend of mine, Zandalee de Gois, was taking part in the event and a few friends and I decided to attend to show our support. The event is held at the Portuguese Club in Rugby, Cape Town and entrance is open to young adults from the age of 16-22 who are members of the Portuguese community.
The evening consists of a series of runway "walks" where contestants show off their casual style and formal-wear. A series of group dances by the contestants also takes place and the entrants are encouraged to show off their style, beauty and personality throughout the show, in order to gain the votes of the judges. The winners of the event represent the Portuguese community for a full year and are very involved in the Blessing of the Fishing Fleet event that takes place annually at the V&A Waterfront.
The show was extremely entertaining and highly competitive, with all contestants giving it their all for the highly coveted crown. Congratulations to Zandalee for winning Miss Personality on the night, by far outshining all the other contestants with her fun and bubbly personality!

My favourite Cat in the Hat book is ?; because...
Hmmm, a tough topic to write about this week, considering I have never read any books in the Cat in the Hat series! Some may find this very strange or peculiar, but consider the fact that I have never even read any Dr. Seuss books, you may think I'm a little more crazier now than you did before.
The reason for this is unbeknownst to me. As a child, I often read many other books, such as Toby Bunny's Secret Hiding Place by Dave Werner; and Walt Disney titles such as The Little Mermaid and The Jungle Book. For some strange reason, however, the Cat in the Hat books, or Dr. Seuss novels in general, were never on my (or my parents' for that matter) reading list!
Even though I did not read the book, I did watch the movie made from one of Dr. Seuss's novels, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! I can't say it was one of my favourite movies or one that I particularly enjoyed, but I'm afraid that is the closest I have come (or probably will come) to reading a Dr. Seuss or Cat in the Hat book.
While attempting to research a bit on this topic, I came across some memorable and meaningful quotes from Dr. Seuss (the author, Theodore Seuss Giesel):

Pigalle Restaurant
A few weeks ago I went for dinner with a few friends to Pigalle Restaurant in Green Point. Not a typical restaurant I would usually go to, seeing as though I am currently living on a student budget, but it is definitely, by far, the most glamourous and breathtakingly beautiful restaurant I have ever been to!
I certainly was not going to miss out on the chance to dress to the nines while enjoying some fine- dining in the process. The occasion was to celebrate my friend’s mom’s 40th birthday. On arrival, we were treated to complimentary Cosmopolitan cocktails, followed by our delicious smoked salmon starter (they were definitely not scarce with the salmon) which is, without a doubt, my favourite dish!
For mains and dessert we were given a few options of which I opted for the beef fillet and the chocolate fondant, definitely two dishes I would highly recommend when dining at Pigalle.
This stunning restaurant greets you with stairs covered in red velvet carpets. As you enter the venue, you feel enchanted as you lay your eyes on the enormous chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and the exquisitely laid tables presented before you. The restaurant can seat a large amount of people and has a cosy bar area apart from the dining area.
There is a live band accompanied by a huge dance floor where guests can dance and enjoy themselves either during or after dinner. The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance. The dining area is extremely classy while the dance floor just adds that extra bit of fun and excitement to your evening.
The experience of dining at Pigalle’s was definitely one I will never forget. If you feel like really treating yourself to something exceptional and out of the ordinary, I would definitely recommend Pigalle for a night of delicious food and great entertainment. Beware though, the fine-dining and extravagance of the venue comes at a steep price!
Booking is essential, so for more details about the restaurant or the menu, visit their website on http://pigallerestaurants.co.za/
Why I have conversations?
The reason I have conversations would be for the obvious explanation: to communicate!
Apart from that, however, conversations are an important component of our everyday lives. It is the method we use to talk to other people in order for us to find out more about them. We also use conversations as a means of entertainment. Think about it, probably not a day goes by without you having a conversation with someone, however insignificant you think it may be at the time.
I love talking to people and having various, even random and meaningless conversations.
I could talk for hours because conversations are what make life interesting. It is your chance to get someone else’s view on a particular matter, and even to converse about something that happened some time ago that you may have forgotten about. By starting a conversation you are able to see if you enjoy that person’s company and if you are able to talk to them. Just today I sat with four friends and we had non-stop conversations for nearly four hours. Guaranteed we could have sat there for at least another four more hours just talking!
As aspiring Public Relations professionals, we need to be good communicators and need to be able to have conversations with others – and to enjoy it too! As PR professionals, we need to have conversations with a variety of people in order to “sell” them our story, product or service. We use conversations as a means of convincing our stakeholders that what we can provide them with is essential to them. In this profession, conversations possibly play the biggest role when communicating to journalists. We need to be able to converse with them in order to form a relationship and to properly pitch our story to them so that they will use it in their publication. Conversations are what make the world go round!
Keep on talking, keep on communicating, keep on conversing… You never know what you may find out about someone just from a simple conversation.

The end is in sight...
It is so hard for me to believe that in just over two months time, I will be done with studying FOREVER! It feels like just the other day that I came to CPUT for the first time and attended my first lectures.
These four years have really flown by, even though along the way that was not the case. I went straight from high school into my tertiary education, without taking a break or a gap year. I struggle to think that the only thing I am used to in my life (i.e. studying or being a student) will soon come to an end for good. I am almost entering "the real world" and although I am mostly excited, I know deep down that I will really miss my student life.
These things come and go so quickly, but that is life. Things progress and we change and evolve and develop into working men and women who have been looked after and spoon-fed for long enough!
So I welcome the upcoming chapter of my life with open arms! I will definitely make an extra attempt to enjoy and embrace my last two months of ever being a student because after this it will be gone for good!

Blisters For Bread 2012
We got up super early on that crisp Sunday morning and made our way to the Green Point Cricket Club, which was the starting point for our 10km walk. Entrants can choose from either a 5km, 10km or a 15km walking distance, and we thought we would stick to the 'do-able' 10km's. We began at 08:30 and finished at around 10:30, taking us two hours to complete. This may sound like a long time, but considering you are walking amongst approximately 20 000 people, it seemed like a fair achievement for us.
The walk took place along the Sea Point Promenade and walkers were greeted with beautiful views of the ocean and some unwelcomed splashes of water from the sea at high-tide. It was a beautiful morning as the air was light and fresh, which was perfect for walkers as it was not too hot or too cold. Along the way, volunteers handed out coke and water, and marshals instructed the walkers where to go, as well as kept them away from the roads and the traffic.
Blisters for Bread is an initiative that was started in 1968 by the Peninsula Feeding Schools Association (PSFA) and is held once a year. The entry fee is R35 per person, and all proceeds are directed to the school feeding programme, which helps to feed 18 children.
I would definitely encourage everyone to join in next year and to support this worthy cause. Not only are you helping the children in need, it is a fun day out and great way to spend a Sunday morning.
The event was definitely enjoyed by all, and I even got actual blisters to show my dire commitment to the cause! For more information about the PSFA or about Blisters for Bread, visit their website on www.psfa.org.za

My big fat BIG dream...
I have never really thought about what my big dream is. Everybody has dreams that they want to aspire to one day. Some of my dreams that I have for myself include being secure in a job one day that I enjoy doing, while earning enough money to live comfortably and to be able to buy all the pretty things that I want in life. I would also like to travel all over the world and explore other places, countries and cultures - considering the fact that I have never even been on an aeroplane!
If I had to choose my one big fat BIG dream, it would definitely be to stay forever young. However silly or unrealistic that may seem, I want to remain a 21-year-old student! I am not naive and I know deep down that getting old is inevitable - nobody can live forever.
It is not the living forever idea that makes me want to stay young, but the fact that I want to be able to go out until late at night, watch movies until 03h00 in the morning, travel the world and go overseas with my friends, and party until the sun comes up. Even though I know that this is not how my life will be forever, wouldn't it be great if it was? These things are not possible once you get older and get more responsibilities. Your life changes 180 degrees.
Although I am still considered 'young' by most people, I am at that stage now where I am beginning to realise that I am getting older. I am almost finished studying and will soon begin working full-time, with accounts to pay on top of other daunting responsibilities. I guess this is just the way of the world.
So from now on, I am going to embrace my youth, my freedom, and my inner-child for as long as I can, and so should you! So stay up late and do the things you always wanted to do, no matter how old you are!
In the words of F.U.N: "Tonight we are young, so let's set the world on fire, we can burn brighter than the sun"
